I have noticed that in this cemetery on the outskirts of Ypres, there is one Canadian burial 28891 Pte Hugh Goodwin Stroyan. He is listed on the CWGC data base as being a native of Derbyshire, this is backed up by his Canadian attestation papers. He is also listed on the data base of the Scottish National War Memorial in Edinburgh Castle.
Has anyone any ideas, or is it a just a mistake.

John,

There are 54 births to Stroyans recorded in Scotland between 1870 and 1900 but NONE with the forename of Hugh.

There is no marriage in Scotland recorded for an Ernest Joseph Stroyan.

I wonder if an error has crept in due to the fact that the 16th Bn. CEF were the "Canadian Scottish" and someone has deemed Hugh to be of Scottish descent?

Name: STROYAN, HUGH GOODWIN
Initials: H G
Nationality: Canadian
Rank: Private
Regiment/Service: Canadian Infantry (Manitoba Regiment)
Unit Text: 16th Bn.

Additional information: Son of Ernest Joseph and Jessie Stroyan, of 4312, Dundas St., Vancouver, British Columbia. Native of Derby, England.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: A. 21.
Cemetery: SEAFORTH CEMETERY, CHEDDAR VILLA

Post a query on Hugh on the Canadian Expeditionary Force Study Group Forum, link above.

Thanks Derek,
He is the only Canadian in the cemetery, so just wondered if his unit was fighting with the Seaforths.

John
I think Hugh Stroyan's burial in Seaforth Cemetery is just a co-incidence.

The 16th Battalion CIF and the 2nd Battalion Seaforths were in action near St. Julien in the 2nd Battle of Ypres but as far as I can tell not together.
On the 22/23 April the Canadian Division and in particular the 10th and 16th Battalions retook the area known as Kitcheners' Wood after the French Colonial troops broke under a severe poison gas attack.
The details of their actions "in the trenches South of Wood 2 miles West of St. Julien" are in the 16th Battalion War Diaries (April 1915 pages 15 to 21) at The Library and Archives of Canada.
www.collectionscanada.gc.ca

Hugh's birth (March quarter of 1897) was registered at Derby.
His father, Ernest Joseph, was born during the December Q 1864 at Bakewell, Derbyshire and he married there September Q 1895.
So there is no Scottish connection.

Hi Ken,
So unless his mother was a Scot which now seems unlikely, he should not be on the Scottish National War Memorial. I shall have a look on Ancestry and see if I can trace them when I have a minute or three.

John

The SNWM seem to have adopted a policy of counting men serving in Scots-Canadian units as eligible for inclusion in the CEF Roll at Edinburgh Castle.
You'll find many Englishmen and Irishmen in the Rolls for the Scottish Regiments and it seems you'll also find many non-Scots in the ranks of these CEF battalions (e.g. 16th Bn, 42nd Bn, 43rd Bn, 72nd Bn, 85th Bn).

The SNWM CEF roll lists 7,550 names and includes guid Scots names such as

ADAMOVICH, Lazar
AIVAZIAN, Edward
AKAM, John
BLENNERHASSETT, Albert James
CASTONGUAY, Napoleon E
DEUXBERRY, Cyril Moore
ZINCK, Leo
ZWICKER, Harold U

If these men were Scottish then I'm a Dutchman.

Many thanks for that Adam, makes a bit of a mockery of what the original proposal was to be either born a Scot, or one or both parents to be such.
