An article about midless idiots runnng amok amongst the very headstones (early Twentieth Century) we are recording. Luckily Anne Anderson has been to Lambhill and has hopefully recorded any which we want which have been destroyed.

Vandals damage headstones at Glasgow cemetery

Vandals have destroyed about 70 headstones in a Glasgow cemetery.

The damage at Lambhill cemetery, estimated at about £60,000, was carried out between 1600 GMT on Thursday and 0830 GMT on Friday.

The stones, most of which were are now beyond repair, date from around 1900 to 1935.

Police described the vandalism as a "repulsive crime" which would cause distress for relatives. They have appealed for information.

Officers were working with Glasgow City Council bereavement services to contact the last known owners of the damaged headstones.

Det Con Stephen Cooke of Maryhill CID, said: "This is a repulsive crime which will cause a lot of distress to the relatives of the deceased.

"I would appeal to anyone who can help identify the persons responsible to contact the police as a matter of urgency".

Bailie James McNally, executive member for land and environmental services with the council, said: "It's a sad state of affairs when we have people out there who are set on causing malicious damage in a cemetery.

"This sort of mindless destruction and vandalism is appalling and I urge anyone with information to come forward."

Just by co-incidence, I was back at Lambhill last week (Wednesday 24th February) to try and find stones I couldn't find on previous visits - it was a bit of a wasted journey as I forgot to take my 'to-find' list with me! Duh! Rolling Eyes

Also, on reading the article you posted the other link to, it says Lambhill Cemetery, but the photo has the title 'Western Necropolis', so which cemetery is it? Although they sit side by side (with St. Kentigern's being the third), they are quite seperate places.

I guess the left wing answer would be; the education system has failed them, there is insufficient leisure activity provided for them and their mothers didn't love them enough.

Right wing answer; life is too easy for them, if they had to worry where their next meal was coming from or if they were going to be conscripted to fight in a war, they wouldn't have time for vandalism.

Probably just gang culture and pure badness. Sad though.
