Was for 5 years (from 1889) Adjutant of the Scottish Rifles. Served in the Egyptian (1882) and South-African Campaigns; later Lt. Colonel Commanding 9th (Lanark) Bn. Highland Light Inf. Re-joined 1914.

Grave/Memorial Reference: 521. (Against South gable of Church.).

SDGW also has him as Lt.
It may be that was being promoted and the family were aware of this. That said, the new rank would not be effective prior to this being notified in the LG. Often death occurred before the LG notice and the present rank is correct.
Sometimes NOK embellished the facts.

I know all about 'embellishments' Laughing

I've found all sorts of them - some just one rank, but others ....... well, some verge on the ridiculous, but as long as we can identify the right man, after all this time, it doesn't really matter if 'promotion' was wee white lie at the time. It's the person - not the rank that matters.
