I saw the Flax memorials at the 4 New Zealanders War Graves at the Western Cemetery Arbroath on Sunday 25th April ( ANZAC DAY) . They were beside the Scottish Poppy Crosses of the Poppy Scotland .

Isn't there one on Harris or have you done that one? I am over hoping to finish off the Western Isles for TWGPP in a few weeks time.

What happened to the NZ photographic project? I have done most of the Commonwealth graves in the North of Scotland/Orkney/Shetland, I used to try to send NZ pictures to their project but it seemed to disappear.

Hi JMB

I am not aware of a New Zealand Service grave on Harris, do you have a name, or a date please?

The project that I am involved in is the Dolores Cross project, which is run by the NewZealand Army museum, and aims to place a Cross on the grave of every New Zealander serving with the NZ Forces who is buried worldwide and to photograph the grave. I am only co-ordinating the UK part of the project.

Is this the project that you were involved in?

Regards,
Brian

I never got involved in the NZ project because I think it had stopped when I starting doing Australian, Canadian, South Africans etc. certainly never got any replies from them.

Scarista New Cemetery
The CWGC website says 5 graves and lists 4

8/3521
Pte J Campbell
NZ Otago Rgt
11 Jan 1926
Age 48

It's a CWGC headstone but probably not in the Debt of Honour because outside the date range though they must be maintaining it. Still waiting for the offficial CWGC reports on that area but probably in that.

Just had a quick check
Inverness-shire
CRAIG in Kilmallie
GRANT in Laggan
Ross-shire
Some in Rosskeen
Alness
Gairloch
Laide 2
Poolewe - don't think I have been there
Argyll
Soroby - not been
Kilkerran - several
Kilbrandon
Pennyfuir

I thought there was one/some on Benbecula but can't see any listed, there quite a few Commonwealth there because of the RAF. Thought that there might have been some around Stornoway, again because of the RAF.

I can dig out the NZ ones that I have if the project is underway again. Been around most on Orkney and Shetland as well. I have always when possible taken pictures of any that I have seen whatever nationality.

Hi JMB,
You are correct, the Grave of John Campbell is maintained by the CWGC, but he is described as a Veteran. Which is why he is not listed on the Debt of Honour.

I have a list of all the New Zealanders in the care of the CWGC, which is why I was suprised when you memtioned a Cemetery on Harris containing a New Zealander. I do not have Scarista on my list of Cemeteries to visit, but when I checked with my list of names, he is there but with a note that he is not a War Casulty, but a veteran buried in 1926.

The objective of the current project, is to place a Cross made of New Zealand Flax on the grave, and then photograph it. This means that photographs taken previously cannot be used, as they do not have the Cross on the Grave.

The list at the start of this thread gave all the Cemeteries that needed Crosses placed on the Graves, and a number of the Cemeteries have since been visited by members of this Forum, and the Crosses placed. I will shortly put up an updated list of outstanding Cemeteries, in the hope that other members can help.

Regards,
Brian

Hi All,

Several weeks ago I made an appeal for help in placing, a small remenberance cross on the New Zealand Wargraves in Scotland, and then photographing the Grave. Some Members of this Forum Volunteered to help, and so far about half of the Cemeteries have been covered, and many of the Crosses already placed and Photographed. - My Thanks to you all.

There are 9 Cemeteries left to do in Scotland, and I am wondering if there are any more Members who can help in these areas?

I have listed the remaining Scottish Cemeteries below, and If any one can help, please contact me, and I will send details, and the Crosses.

Thanks, and Kind Regards,
Brian Hillman

Crathie Cemetery, Crathie & Braemar, Aberdeenshire, 1
Dyce Old Churchyard, Aberdeenshire, 4
Peterhead Old Churchyard, Aberdeenshire, 1
Banff Cemetery , Banffshire, 1

Kinloss Abbey Burial Ground, Moray, 6
Lossiemouth Burial Ground , Moray, 3
Kirkwall (St Olaf's) Cemetery , Orkney, 4

Hi Ghostwhisperer,

That would be great - Thanks.
If you could send me a PM with your address and email, I will send you the crosses and details of the graves.
Is Lossiemouth also possible for you?

Kind Regards,
Brian
