Major Denzil Hughes-Onlsow listed several times in Ayrshire on the Scottish War Memorials Project has a connection to Balkissock near Ballantrae. I wonder if he was related to Lieut Gen John Hughes?

I'm a bit slow to respond to this thread, but I've only just come across the forum.

General Hughes is not directly related to Denzil Hughes-Onslow. Hughes bought Balkissock at auction in the 1820s. When he died, he left it (and most of the Stinchar valley) to his niece who was married to a Reverend Arthur Onslow. In gratitude, they added Hughes to their children's surnames. Denzil was the second son, but after he married the heiress of Laggan estate near Ballantrae he bought the neighbouring Balkissock from his elder brother Arthur. Arthur and Denzil both died in WW1.

I've just come across this reference to a burial at Alloway Auld Kirk. It's a memorial stone at Pimore Chirch, Laighaldons. I haven't been to Pinmore to check it out but it's included in the survey of monumental inscriptions for Barrhill Old Cemetery by the Alloway and Southern Ayrshire Family History Society. Apparentlt, it is a Celtic Cross and memorial in front of the church). "To the glory of God and in memory of Hugh Hamilton of Pinmore and Daljarrock sometime captain in the King's Dragoon Guards, Deputy Lieutenant for the County of Ayr b 24 Apr 1828 d. 15 Aug 1910. Buried at Alloway Auld Kirk. This cross is raised by Georgina Hay Hamilton his widow. "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on thee."
