I've finally got around to sorting out a couple non cwgc headstones i photographed at sleepyhillock in montrose, however the very first one has me stumped.

The only details are:

DESMOND L. ARTHUR
Lieutenant
Royal Flying Corps

Killed at Montrose 27th May 1915

I cannot find anyone on CWGC to fit. Anyone able to come up with anything?

Cheers,
Derek.

Hi

Lt Desmond Arthur , 2 Sqn RFC was killed whilst flying near Lunan on 27 th May 1913 so he missed the WW1 period for the Imperial War Graves Commision of 4 August 1914 to 31st Aug 1921 . Lt Arthur flew out from the tented airfield at Upper Dysart which was the airfield before the CO Major Burke found a better location in Montrose later that year . Lt Arthur's machine landed and his body landed near Lunan railway station and only the station masters house remains . Photos show the crash site and his funeral took place at the Scottish Episcopal Church in Montrose. His brother a serving army officer in the British Army in 1913 paid for his grave plot and headstone ... It was he who was always sighted by the airmen in the later months as the Ghost of Montrose airfield as the War Office blamed this officer for his own death but ages later yet another enquiry found that it was the aeroplane that was at fault with a "bodged up " repair before it was flown north by Major Burke a few days before. Major Burke then Lt Col was later killed in action in WW1 whilst serving in the army ....

How very odd, the gravestone definitely says 1915. But a 1913 death would make more sense for there being no record.

Cheers for the Pat,
Derek.
