The collier Main, a defensively armed merchant steamer, was intercepted by a German submarine UC-75 one and a half miles East of Drummore on October 9th 1917 when en route from Belfast to Liverpool in ballast. The submarine opened fire from the surface and sank the Main by gunfire. Twelve men were killed. The ship was refloated in 1920 and returned to service in 1922.

SS Treveal [Note CWGC spells it "Teveal"] was a British Armed Merchant steamer. On 4 February 1918 when en route from Algiers to Barrow she was torpedoed by German submarine U-53 and sunk when off the Skerries, Anglesey. 33 on board died.

On 23 November 1916 the Wigtownshire Free Press reported, "Official intimation has been received by Mrs McCaig, Fergusson Inn, Monreith, that her eldest son, Cpl Hugh McCaig, was killed in action in Flanders. This is her second bereavement, her youngest son, Private John McCaig, having gone down in the Royal Edward in August of last year. Corporal McCaig, immediately on receipt of the news of his brother's death, came from Canada and enlisted in the KOSB. Promotion soon came, and he was latterly transferred to the 89th Machine Gun Company, in which service he fell. Mrs McCaig has also received a letter from the Officer Commanding the Company: 'I am very sorry indeed to tell you of the death of your son, Lance Cpl Hugh McCaig, of my Coy, in action on 17th October 1916 ... We are all very sorry to lose any of our original Company, but the loss of your son is a particular heavy blow. He was such a splendid soldier and all who came into contact with him said the same thing. Please accept from the whole Company and myself the deepest sympathy.' The only remaining son, Sergt James McCaig, has seen many months' active service abroad, and is at present in an English hospital, recovering from an illness which necessitated his leaving the trenches for a time. The sincere sympathy of the whole community goes out to the bereaved mother in her time of heavy trial and sorrow.
