Wigtownshire Free Press (19 September 1918) reported: Mr and Mrs John Caven, Main Street, Port William, have received official intimation that their son, Pte John D Caven, RSF, was killed in action on August 23. Prior to enlisting in March 1917, Pte Caven was employed at Broompark Farm.

Cemetery: Harlebeke New British Cemetery
On 20 January 1916 the Wigtownshire Free Press reported: Lance-Corporal David Chesney, Camerson Highlanders, son of Mr Robert Chesney, Challochglass, Kirkcowan, is at present in hospital in Chichester, having been severely frostbitten in the trenches in France.
And on 28 November 1918: Mr and Mrs Robert Chesney, Challochglass, Kirkcowan, have received intimation that their youngest son, Sergt David Chesney, Cameron Highlanders, was killed in action in France on 20th October. Sergt Chesney enlisted in April 1915, and before joining he was employed by Mr Mitchell, Mark of Shennanton, Kirkcolm.
On 22 May 1919 the Free Press reported: In a recent issue of the London Gazette the following Wigtownshire soldiers are included in a list of thse who were awarded the Military Medal ... S/17708 Sergt D Chesney, Cameron Highlanders.

Wigtownshire Free Press (19 October 1916) reported: Intimation has been received of the death (from wounds received in action) of Trooper Henry Dixon, son of Mr H Dixon, farmer, Shedpark, Barrachan. In a letter to Mr Dixon from a comrade, it appears he was severely wounded in both hands and feet by shrapnel on 16th September and died the following day. Trooper Dixon, previous to enlisting, was a member of the Glasgow Police Force. He joined the Life Guards in November 1914 and proceeded to the front in April last with his squadron.

Wigtownshire Free Press (11 November 1915) reported: Mr William McAllister, Old Mill, Mochrum, has received official intimation that his son Gunner William McAllister, has died of wounds received in action in France. Gunner McAllister was wounded on 27th September, and died on 3rd October. He joined the RFA at the outbreak of war. Gunner McAllister, who was only 23 years of age, was a general favourite, and his early death is greatly deplored. Besides being a gunner, he was also a signalman. Two of gunner McAllister’s brothers are in the Army. Gunner McAllister went to France in September.
