This gravestone names 4 grandsons who gave the ultimate sacrifice during WW1.
I can only trace 2 certain details, 1 possible and unable to find the fourth.

Additional Information: Brother of James Mitchell, of "Strathallan," of 15, Greenock Avenue, Old Cathcart, Glasgow.
In March 1918 a sap opposite the cemetery was blown in, and seven men of the 180th Siege Battery were killed. Their bodies were found in 1927 and buried in the cemetery.
The cemetery now contains 111 Commonwealth burials of the First World War, five of them unidentified. Two of the graves destroyed by shell fire are represented by special memorials.
This burial is one of these.
The gravestone is concealed behind a large bush and is difficult to read properly.

For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He led an attack with great success and initiative, taking prompt measures to secure his exposed flank, and showing great courage and a fine example throughout.
London Gazette 16 January 1917 Issue: 29904 Page: 613
The following announcement is substituted for that which appeared in the Gazette of 19th Aug. 1916 : — Lce-Corpl. Archibald McKerrow Mitchell, from King Edward's Horse, to be 2nd Lt. (on prob.). 4th July 1916.
There is a Medal Card which has him as Private 791 King Edward's Horse. |
