David William Leggatt, Lieutenant, H.M. Submarine Usk, Royal Navy.

Born 1916 in Bolton, Lancashire. Son of William and Mildred Heywood (Haslam) Leggatt. David lived with his uncle and aunt Oliver Heywood Haslam and Agnes Miller (Duncan) Haslam at Cairngill House, Sandyhills, Colvend. Pre-war he was an Acting Sub Lieutenant with a seniority date of 1 May 1937. Attended submarine training at HMS Dolphin (Submarine Depot, Gosport) April to December 1938. Joined HM Submarine Regent and then transferred to HM Submarine Usk in March 1941. (Royal Navy Submarine Museum)
Lost at sea late April/early May 1941 - The Usk sailed from Malta on 19 April 1941 to patrol off the north-west coast of Sicily but, on 25 April, signalled that due to intense anti-submarine activity was moving to the Cape Bon area off the coast of Tunisia. She was never heard from again.
