EDMOND G. CHISSEL, 1st Gordon Highlanders
Killed in action at Brandford, Jagobsrust, South Africa 30th April 1900 aged 21 years

The following Obituary was in the Stirling Observer, 9th May 1900.

Stirling Soldier killed at Brandfort

Information has been received of the death of Private E. Chissel of the 1st Gordon Highlanders at Jacobsrust in the advance on Brandfort on the 30th April.

Deceased was engaged in dislodging a number of Boers from a kopje, and the latter on retreating fired on the company, killing three of the men and wounding several others.

Private Chissel was a native of Stirling and joined the Gordons at Glasgow in 1897. About six years ago, he was employed by Messrs. McKinlay & Son, clothiers and afterwards in the works of Messrs. Kemp & Nicolson, Forth Street. He was for nearly two years, a member of “B” Company of the local Volunteers and was connected with that Company when he joined the army. His father is dead, and his mother resided in London.

Deceased was a nephew of Mr. James Edmond, formerly a sergeant in the 72nd and for some time Assistant Poor Inspector in Stirling, and now employed as a clerk in the Ordnance Stores at Forthside.

Private Chissel, who was only 21 years of age, was brought up by Mr. and Mrs. Edmond, for whom much sympathy is felt.
