No of CWGC Burials: Mar Cemetery: 34 Valley Cemetery: 10

Mar and Valley Cemeteries are two of the five 'Top of the Town' graveyards which surround Stirling Castle. The other three graveyards are: Ballangeich, Snowdon and Holy Rude Churchyard (which is listed on CWGC as 'East and West Churchyard')

CWGC have these Cemeteries listed separately but for the purpose of this project, they have been grouped together. The CWGC Burials will state which Cemetery, family stones will be listed alphabetically

That's a lot of names on a single gravestone. Do you know why they did not all have separate stones?

I don't know Paul, this is the first time I've come across a stone like this. You can't tell from the photo, but the stone is around 5/6 feet tall.

They've all got separate grave reference numbers so I expect they were all buried within a small area immediately beside it - maybe this was a standard type stone elsewhere and they just thought they would use it here?

Work is underway to re-erect fallen stones in these cemeteries - a few sections are cordoned-off whilst the work is being carried out. (Summer 2007)

Mod edit: Adam

The S.S Sambut was an American Liberty Ship in British service. 2nd Engineer Officer Davie was killed along with 18 soldiers when the ship
was shelled off Dover by German long range guns in Calais.

More details here:

Sad to see both Davie brothers died with a few weeks of each other.

At least Stirling Council are re-erecting the stones. The vandals at Edinburgh council are not doing a thing. At least when they knock them over now they try and put the inscription face up.

David Forrester is not listed on the inscription. Neither, it seems are any of his direct family.

The pyramid in the background of the second photograph is the Covenanter Memorial which sits between Valley Cemetery and Stirling Castle Esplanade.

Listed on Stirling Civic Memorial: http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?t=59&mforum=warmemscot

From David Forrester's Service Record:
Attested: Dunblane, 6th November 1914
Address: 23 Forth Crescent, Stirling (or 'Lyndwood', Forth Crescent, Stirling)
Age: 20 years, 320 days
Occupation: Fishmonger
Religion: Presbyterian
Description: Blue eyes, auburn hair, fair complexion. Height 5' 6 1/4".
Next of Kin: Mother, Jane Forrester nee Scott (no mention of father)

Died at 8.20 p.m., 1st Eastern General Hospital, Cambridge after having served 1 year and 5 days.

Cause of death: Gun shot wound - thorax. Suffocation from haemorrage into trachea.

According to the 1891 Census, David's parents Arthur (age 37) & Jane Forrester (age 27) were living at 38 Murray Place, Stirling. Arthur's occupation was listed as Fish Merchant.

By 1901, Jane (age 37) was head of the household living at 40 Barnton Street. Her occupation is listed as Fishmonger.

I can't find a death for an Arthur Forrester anywhere in Scotland (apart from Arthur & Jane's son Arthur who died in 1959, Stirling) so perhaps they separated or if he died, then it was somewhere outwith Scotland.
