| I have just discovered this site and was fascinated and pleased to find this record relating to Helen McLaren. I knew her well and was stationed at Leconfield when she was killed and attended her funeral in Stirling. Helen was a single girl living in the officers mess together with about 10 others of which I was one. Indeed whilst Leconfield was a large station there was only about 50 officers in total as its main business was repairing Lightning aircraft which needed a few managers and a large number of workers. As a result the officers all knew each other quite well particularly the 'livers in' who were the hub of the mess social life. The only active aircrew on the station were the 202 Sqn search and rescue crews and because of the tight knit officer community it was common for the 'ground' officers to be invited for rides in the 202 Sqn Whirlwind helicopters. Both Helen and I had on numerous occasions acted as ' survivors' jumping in the North Sea to give the 202 Sqn crews practice in rescuing survivors. It was on one such ride that Helen was killed a particularly unfortunate accident as it would seem that the Canadian exchange pilot flying the helicopter chose to climb into a cloud to try and avoid bad weather and the turbulence caused the aircraft to break up and crash. The funeral was an extremely sad event for me losing a close friend and fellow officer with whom I not only shared a 'mess home' but had also been through training together. |

According to the Logie (Bridge of Allan) cricket club roll of honour. A Sergeant C W McLaren of the Scottish Rifles died but unable to locate him.
Also a Second Lieutenant D Flind of the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders i am unable to locate.
The roll of honour was published in 1921 |
