This is a confusing situation, since the CWGC list this as separate cemeteries. However, South Lanarkshire Council has them as separate sections of one cemetery. It's clear that the sections have been added to the original churchyard, which is rumoured to have been the location of the marriage of William Wallace.

So, for the purposes of this forum, the four sections will be grouped together. Mainly because sorting them all would be a complete nightmare.

Details from SLC:

Quote:
Lanark Cemetery has four distinct sections which have been developed over many years. The oldest section, St. Kentigerns, which houses the ruins of the old church, is rumoured to be the marrying place of William Wallace, while St. Nicholas has a focal point of the covenanters memorial. St. Leonards and St. Catherines are the newest sections and can be found on either side of the Murray Chapel which was built in memory of the Murray family. There are no new lairs available within the cemetery.

St. Kentigern - No. of CWGC burials: 5
St. Leonards's - no. of CWGC burials: 18
St. Nicholas - no. of CWGC burials: 5
St. Catherine's - no. of CWGC burials: 9

So 37 in total.

Hi David

I am wondering if you can help me?
On doing my family history I have come across a James Lawson, who on the 1901 census was listed as an Army Pensioner and being a Sergeant in the 26th Cameronian regiment. He died not long after - 15/10 in Lanark, Lanarkshire.
I presume he would not be in a CWGC grave but is anyone able to locate his grave? Also is anyone able to supply any information on him or his regiment?

thanks for your time
yours sincerely
Robert

Hi all

I contacted the South Lanark council but although he is buried there, there is no marker on his grave, so it looks like no photo. He apparently is buried in the common part of the cemetery.
A bit disappointing.

regards

Robert

Sad that there is no grave marker - but as far as I know, not one member of my father's family ever had a grave marker

I think you should get an overall photograph of the cemetery he is in, print it, write on the back who he was and where he is buried and put it with the family papers for generations to find in the future.

Glad you were able to confirm where he is buried and his name liives on in this thread on the internet.

\Paul

Hi all

Is someone able to take a picture of the area he is buried in or guide me to a site which has photos of the cemetery in it?

Also if you are interested in his story then see what I have found here-

I have now photographed all the War Graves and numerous family gravestones with war related information for this Cemetery.

Thanks to Emma Crossan for information and Amanda Stirrat for locating and directing me to several graves which I could not trace. Both these ladies work for South Lanarkshire Council and their assistance has been invaluable.
