There are a fair few graves here, so it is likely to take me some time. The cemetery contains the graves of 2 VC winners:

Admiral Sir Martin Eric Dunbar-Nasmith; RN (VC won in the Sea of Marmara, Turkey in 1915) and Lt William Rennie; 90th Perthshire Light Infantry (VC won at Lucknow, India in 1857).

I have yet to find either.

The graves I photographed today will be added to the Forum tomorrow.

Roxy

PS. From CWGC site:

Cemetery: ELGIN NEW CEMETERY
Country: United Kingdom
Locality: unspecified
No. of Identified Casualties: 54

The site http://www.victoria-cross.co.uk/ has details of the Victoria Cross holders and the site owner (Les) will be interested in what you find and may even have some info on the gravestone location.

Paul,

Thanks. I had another wander around the cemetery today - and got a few more photos. Still no sign of the VC winners though!

I'll check out your link and see if it provides any help.

This man is post WW2 regarding CWGC but, thanks to Adam Brown, I have some information:

URQUHART, JOHN MARTIN
Rank: Nav 3
Service: Royal Air Force
Service Number: 3020898
Station: RAF Kabrit
Place of Birth/Home Town: NEWBURGH, FIFE
Date of Birth: 03 April 1925
Age: 23
Date of Death: 22 May 1948
Cemetery Name: BRITISH NEW WAR CEMETERY
Cemetery Address: HAIFA, PALESTINE
Grave Number: F C 19
Included on Armed Forces Memorial: Yes
Included on Roll of Honour: Yes

He was actually killed by the Egyptian Air Force

From

http://www.britains-smallwars.com/Palestine/raf.htm

The Union Jack was finally lowered in Palestine on 14th May 1948. The next day the independent state of Israel was proclaimed. Within hours, Spitfire IXs of the Royal Egyptian Air Force attacked Tel Aviv and Sde Nov Airfield. One of their aircraft was lost to ground fire, salvaged and subsequently used by the newly created Israeli Air Force.

On the morning of 22nd May, REAF Spitfires attacked Ramat David Airfield where the RAF was still in occupation to cover the final withdrawal of the remaining British forces. Five Spitfires were destroyed on the ground and four airmen killed. Another Spitfire was written off when it crashed during takeoff. RAF Spitfires of a No.208 Squadron detachment shot two of the Egyptian attackers down and a third was lost to fire from Corporal Farent of 52 Rifle Squadron, RAF Regiment with a Bren gun. The Egyptians eventually apologized for the 'unfortunate incident' and explained the error by claiming that they thought the airfield had been taken over by the Israelis. A few days later the RAF left Palestine forever.
