Some interesting graves in this cemetery. There are quite a few with bronze badges attached and a few where there are no other family inscriptions so the stones mark empty graves.

Is the Pringle officer one of the woollen mill Pringles?

Walter Gerald Pringle was the only son of Robert Pringle of Wood Norton, Hawick, the owner of Robert Pringle & Son, hosiery manufacturers in the town, a company still in existence today in the guise of Pringle of Scotland.
In his spare time Walter had been captain of the Hawick Motor Cycling Club, a position which would have brought him into contact with the great Jimmie Guthrie, the World Motorcycling Champion, who served as a motor dispatch rider in the Great War.

It was said that Walter’s death was never accepted by his mother who thereafter kept a place set for him at the family dinner table.

In 1919, the family erected a plaque to him in Wilton Parish Church:
‘To the glory of God and in proud and loving memory of Walter Gerald Pringle, 2nd Lieutenant, 6th KOSB who gave his life for King and Country at Paschendaele, Belgium, 12th October, 1917, aged 24. We remember him, what he was with thankful heart, the bright, the brave, the tender and the true’.

(I have yet to record the above memorial in Wilton Church)
