This one is in a locked enclosure, not possible to enter and very difficult to photograph. You may have more luck in winter with the leaves off the tree.

Cannot yet identify this man on CWGC - the transcription reads

Erected by Grandfather in memory of his granddaughter Agnes Hannah who died at Crossmichael Village 31st October 1890 aged 25 years.
Also WILLIAM son of the above who fell at Nueve Chappelle 12 March 1915 aged 17 1/2 years.

There was a Charles William Hannah born 1897 in Kirkcudbright which aligns with the 17 1/2 age but Agnes could not be his mother.
"Son of the above" may refer to the "Grandfather" - we'll see.

UPDATE: I'm now fairly sure that this is WILLIAM McGILL Private 2nd Gordons.
Agnes (Hannah) McGill, married to James McGill, a Blacksmith, died 31st October 1899 (not 1890) in Crossmichael.
The Stewartry RoH has a William McGill of Stockmoss Smithy, Dundrennan. Enlisted November 1914 in 2nd Gordon Highlanders. Reported missing at Nueve Chappell on 11th or 12th March 1915 and presumed killed on that date.

Name: McGILL, WILLIAM
Initials: W
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Private
Regiment/Service: Gordon Highlanders
Unit Text: 2nd Bn.
Date of Death: 11/03/1915
Service No: S/7796
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: Panel 39 to 41.
Memorial: LE TOURET MEMORIAL

John Sproat McGill, Gunner (76888) Royal Garrison Artillery.
Latterly, Gunner (452092) Labour Corps.

John was living in Preston, Lancashire when he enlisted. In October 1916 he sustained a detached retina in his right eye due to an accidental injury while on active service in France, and in April 1918 was discharged from the army as no longer fit for active service. He died on 27 February 1919 at home in Preston.
He is listed on the Crossmichael War Memorials.

ROBERT COULTHART - " killed off St. Vincent, June 16th 1693, fighting under Admiral Rooke"

On 16 June 1693 a combined English and Dutch naval fleet, under the command of Admiral Rooke, fought off a French fleet attacking an Anglo-Dutch merchant ship convoy in what some sources call the Battle of Lagos.

Is this our earliest recorded "killed in action" ????
