And this is how John Daykins won his Victoria Cross (entry from www.victoria-cross.co.uk)

DAYKINS, John Brunton
Sergeant 2nd/4th Battalion York and Lancaster Regiment.
London Gazetted on 6th January, 1919
VC Medal's Custodian is The York And Lancaster Regimental. Museum.
Born on 26th March, 1883 at Ormiston, Roxburgh, Scotland..
Died on 24th January 1933 at Jedburgh, Scotland.
Memorial not known.
Digest of Citation reads:
On 20th October, 1918 at Solesmes, France, Sergeant Daykins, with 12 remaining men of his platoon, rushed a machine gun and during subsequent severe hand-to-hand fighting he himself disposed of many of the enemy and secured the objective. He then located another machine gun which was holding up an operation of his company. Under heavy fire he worked his way alone to the post and shortly afterwards returned with 25 prisoners and an enemy machine-gun, which he mounted at his post. His magnificent fighting spirit and example inspired his men, saved many casualties and contributed largely to the success of the attack.

"October 21st Monday

Bush & Shipping Operations going along in good shape. Mill Operations still at a standstill pending arrival of New Main Pulley Drive. Accident occured in Woods, at about 4.30 P.M., Pte Mclaughlin being the victim. Same was caused by logs on a Skid, where he was working at the time, falling and crushing him. He died during the evening about 10.30 P.M. No further points of interest. Operations commenced at Kelso.

October 22nd - Tuesday

Bush and Shipping Operations progressing quite favourably. Mill still at a standstill, awaiting a ne Main Pulley Drive. Arrangements etc., made for the burial of Pte McLaughlin, and headquarters advised of his death etc, Operations commenced at Kelso. No other points of interest

October 23rd - Wednesday

Bush & Shipping Operations going along in good shape. Mill Operations still at a standstill pending arrival of new Main Pulley Drive. Funeral Service of Pte McLaughlin conducted at 3.00 o'clock P.M. No other points of interest."

Re Sgt Morrison

"October 10th

No change in Ooperations. All sidewalks laid throughout Camp. Serious Accident occurred in Bush, caused by falling tree.
Sgt Morrison seriously injured, Horse killed. No further points of interest.

October 11th

No material change in Operations with the exception of Mill closing during the afternoon owing to shortage of Logs & Railway trouble. Sgt Morrison died at 8 P.M. night of 10/10/18, arrangements being made for funeral. No other points of interest.

October 13th

Sunday - No Operations. Funeral Service of Sgt Morrison took place at 2 P. M. All Ranks of 139 Company attending, also 127 Company & ASC Entire Ceremony carried out quite satisfactorily. No further points of interest."
