Lieutenant HAROLD PERCIVAL PATON
Killed in action at Mafeking, South Africa, 26th December 1899 aged 32
Fourth son of John and Mary Paton (nee Graham)
[Mod Edit: Adam
From this websiste: http://www.pinetreeweb.com/wilson-26-02-mafeking-defence.htm
Attack on the Boer position known as Game Tree Fort
...Captain Vernon, Lieutenant Paton, Corporal Cooke, Corporal Pickard, and Sergeant Ross, broke desperately forward, crossed the ditch, and strove to reach the loop-holes, into which the officers emptied their revolvers. At the sight of these figures scrambling up the face of the fort, all in the rear felt certain that the work had been carried. Cooke was now on the iron roof with the bullets swishing round him at the shortest point-blank range, yet, strange to say, though his tunic was riddled, he himself came off without a scratch. Paton was shot deadwith Sergeant-Major Paget, both fighting to the last; Vernon, an officer of faultless bravery, fell dead with his third glorious wound; there was no one left to lead and none to follow.
And from this webiste: http://www.angloboerwar.com/Casualties/casualties_pq.htm
Paton, Lieutenant Harold Percival
No. 1 Troop, Protectorate Regiment
He was killed in action at Game Tree Hill in a sortie from Mafeking, December 26th, 1899. He was educated at Loretto School, Musselburgh, where he was in the XI and XV, being a good cricketer and football player. This officer's death is mentioned by Major General Baden-Powell in his despatch from Mafeking of May 18th, 1900, LG, February 8th, 1901. Lieutenant Paton was killed at the very muzzles of the enemy's guns. He was buried in the cemetery at Mafeking.] |

ALEXANDER D. MORRISON, Chief Engineer, B.?.S.N. Coy
Who died while on a visit to his native country
11th May 1899 aged 38? Years
I am unsure whether this man had a military connection as I can't think what B.?.S.N. might stand for?
*Edit
I have been advised that the letters would be B.I.S.N., British India Steam Navigation (Company).
