Gress Cemetery lies 9 miles north of Stornoway along the B895 road to North Tolsta, just south of the village of Gress. The graveyard is located about a quarter of a mile north of the bridge, which is passed upon leaving the larger village of Back. Ample carparking is available, at the cemetery itself and across the road by the picnic area.

The cemetery is draped across undulating hillocks, and there is a difference in altitudes between various parts of this fairly extensive graveyard. It looks out over the Gress River and Broad Bay.

Many of the men interred here are listed with a by-name, quoted in italics below their name. This is a local custom, due to the relative lack of variety in names. The by-name is made up of the names of ancestors; mac = son.
