Below are the headstones within Maybole Town Cemetery. The Cemetery is at th foot of the hill Maybole lies upon and is in the grounds of Kincraig Church.

Notes on loss
At 08.07 hours on 2 Nov, 1942, U-522 fired four torpedoes at the convoy SC-107 about 500 miles northeast of St.Johns and observed hits on four ships. However, only Maritima and Mount Pelion were hit and sunk.
The master, 28 crew members and three gunners from the Maritima (Master Arthur George Phelps-Mead) were lost, because the ship sank within four minutes. 22 crew members and five gunners were picked up by HMCS Arvida (K 113) (Lt A.I. MacKay) and landed at Londonderry. _________________ Jon |

The following Private Stone/Memorial Commemorates the life of the following:
Captain John Lees
5th Battalion Royal Scots Fuseliers
Killed in Action at the Battle of Gaza
19 April 1917
Interred at Gaza
Also Commemorated on the Jerusalem Memorial
The inscription on the stone reads:
A territorial officer before the great war
he rejoined his regiment and fought with it in Egypt, Sinai and Palestine
He was killed on Lees Hill after gallantly leading his company to victory
at the capture of a fortified position.
He is buried near Gaza
He was Beloved and respected by his men and by his brother officers
and his memory is honoured among all who knew him in his native town
of Maybole where he was born on 2nd October 1889.
