Lochrutton Church is on the outskirts of the village of Lochfoot. It is signposted from the Old Military (Roman) Road and is approximately half a mile up an overgrown steep track. It can be driven with care and there is space to park outside the churchyard. The church itself is disused and in poor condition. The parish war memorial is sited on the West facing Church wall.

When I visited just over a year ago, the church was in the process of being turned into a private dwelling. I thought it odd given that there are burials. Was this building work not continued?

It is very much still a church with the pews etc still intact inside. Some of the windows are broken and in a bad way with at least one of the frames falling inwards. It is in a very neglected and sorry state.
I have no idea who owns it but I would be very surprised if it were to be turned into a dwelling! Saying that the views are amazing, but I'd imagine it would be very eerie after dark....
I have just found that D. Muirhead is David Muirhead as his full name is on the war memorial mounted on the church wall to the right of the entrance.

I have further information on the War Grave at Lochrutton.
David Muirhead was my grandmother’s first husband. He was in the 6th Battalion of the Royal Scots Fusiliers and was one of seven soldiers killed in a mysterious rail accident at Catterick Camp North Yorkshire on Saturday, 15th September 1917. Fifty other soldiers were injured when the train ran out of control because someone accidentally or intentionally released the brakes on the carriages.
I can supply further information about the accident if required.
Hope this information is useful |

That's very interesting, if you have a family photo of the man, we would be very pleased to see it here.

Sorry I have no photos. The only additional information I have on David Muirhead is as follows,
David was born at Auchenfad, Auchencairn and was the son of James Muirhead and Jane Walker. His widow was Susan Ireland and she had 6 children and lived at Lochfoot. |

Since he was born at Auchenfad, Auchencairn, David Muirhead has three pages in my book, Answering the Call, due out later this month. Unfortunately, I was unable to track down any photograph of David.
