Lyness Naval Cemetery on the island of Hoy is the final resting place for 573 casualties, according to the CWGC website. Gravestones for 581 individuals of British, German, Norse and other nationalities have been identified in this graveyard.

It also contains a number of monuments to individual ships (e.g. HMS Vanguard, HMS Barham), although the largest number of casualties (124) came from the sinking of HMS Hampshire off Marwick Head on 5 June 1916.

Lyness lies on the southern shores of Scapa Flow, which was a major naval base during both world wars. The base itself, scattered around the ferry terminal at the village, has been left to fall into decay.

I have now completed putting up more than 600 pictures of wargraves from Lyness cemetery. There were also a large number of stones for Sailors from the Great War or Sailors from the 1939-1945 War, a selection of which are featured on the last entry under this post. I have a fair number of German gravestones, and have found a little info on some of the men on the Volksbund website. I shall post a query for Norwegian men in the Queries section, and would appreciate it if anybody has a link for a website that gives info on them.

A few notes on the pictures.
I visited the cemetery on a very sunny morning, which created a problem with shadows. Even more so as there was copious growth of shrubs, trailing over some of the gravestones. In order to obtain a picture with legible writing, I sometimes had to assume a rather acute angle.

I have listed all memorials alphabetically, irrespective of nationality, by surname then first name.
