There are two names on this stone from different World Wars.
They are related - John McKnight Martin is the son of James Milroy's
half-sister.

Captain Charles Bie Candlish - the following is an extract from old-kirkcudbright.net/pages/scaur1.asp
"Captain Candlish went into the steam-coasting trade until war broke out, when he offered his services to his King
and country though much over the age, and he was sent to France to take the command of barges carrying ammunition.
There his health broke down and the gastric trouble contracted was the cause of his death at sea a year or two later."

Candlish and two other Captains - Robert Bie and Henry Cumming - are remembered on the Colvend War Memorial
but not by CWGC.

Lt. Young of the 4th Lowland (Howitzer) Brigade, 52nd Division, Royal Field Artillery, served in Egypt with the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force and in the Dardanelles. He died in the 21st General Hospital, Alexandria from dysentry. The family had a home in Rockcliffe, Colvend and he is listed on the Colvend War Memorial.

JOHN SCOTT OSWALD
Guardsman (22215678) 1st Battalion, Scots Guards.
Born 30 March 1932 at Newton on Ayr.

Only recently I was told of a young soldier, buried in Colvend Churchyard, who had fainted while on parade and fallen on his weapon.
Guardsman Oswald died at 1100 hours on 25th June 1951 on the Square, Glencorse Camp, Milton Bridge, Midlothian as the result of a "bayonet wound of the neck". He was just 19.
He is listed on the Armed Forces Memorial and Roll of Honour.
