Wigtownshire Free Press (27 December 1917) reported: Mrs Dodds, Glasserton Street, Whithorn, has received official intimation that her husband, Private W. J. Dodds, Royal Fusiliers, was killed in action on November 30.

Note that the grave stone is inscribed 1918 rather than 1917.

Wigtownshire Free Press (18 May 1916) reported: Mr Thomas Robertson, a son of Mr Thomas Robertson, baker, Whithorn, chief clerk to Wm Stapleton, district passenger agent, Canadian Northern Railway, and formerly clerk to Mr Gilbert Swain, city passenger agent of the same Company, has enlisted in the University Battalion. Mr Robertson has been with the Canadian National Railway since June 1913, and is a prominent member of the Sons of Scotland, having captained the football team of that Society. Another son has been with the 4th Canadians for over a year.

Wigtownshire Free Press (26 September 1918) reported: Mr Thomas Robertson, 91 George Street, Whithorn, has received intimation that his son, Private Thomas Robertson, Canadians, died of wounds on 10th September. Private Robertson enlisted about three years ago, and went to France 18 months ago. Before going to Canada he was engaged as a railway booking clerk at Dunragit Station. This is the second son Mr Robertson has lost in the war. Private William Robertson having been killed by a sniper at Courcelette about two years ago.

James Brown.

Wigtownshire Free Press (23 April 1863) reported: At Whithorn on the 15th inst Colour Sergeant James Brown, eldest son of Mr Samuel Brown aged [unreadable] years. Deceased served in the 24th Regiment for a period of 18 years in India, where he had a severe attack of fever and ague, from the effect of which he never fully recovered.

John Wallace: RNB Dragoons.

Wigtownshire Free Press (13 August 1846) reported: At Whithorn, on the 3d inst, Sergeant John Wallace, aged 63; one of the few surviving veterans of Waterloo. A brave soldier, an honest man, and highly respected by all who knew him.

John Pender

Galloway Gazette 1 January 1972 printed the following obituary. It is with regret that we note the passing of Captain JCF Pender who, having been in indifferent health for some time, died at home, Stronchroble, Garlieston, on Tuesday night. He was 74.
Captain Pender was one who had given a lifetime service to his country. In 1914 at the age of 17 this young man enlisted in the Lothian and Borders Horse Regiment. A few months later he was commissioned into the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders and was drafted to France where he was severely wounded and gassed. In 1921 Captain Pender went to Nigeria where he served as an administrative officer with the colonial service until 1948 when he retired to Garlieston.
He is survived by his wife Isobel, one son and three grandchildren to whom we extend much sympathy. Captain Pender was the second son of the late Major and Mrs Pender, Castlewigg, Whithorn.

Having made enquiries on the Zulu War Discussion and Reference Forum (www.1879zuluwar.com) it looks like this is Trooper William Gordon of the Frontier Light Horse, a resident of Port Elizabeth, South Africa.
