Hello all.

My names John Mccann and i live in Dublin.Im a native of Coatbridge and im planning to list all the Great War names on the Coatbridge Memorial on a disc to give to schools, library, church etc in my home town.Im planning to give a basic summary of each man using SDGW,CWGC and any other resources that can help along with any other info i can find.Ive already had advice from several people on this forum via GWF and i appreciate that advice and help offered. All help given through here and other sites will be mentioned in this project which is purely a guide to leave in my home town.Im sure you`ll all be hearing a lot from me mostly asking for help .Im looking forward to this project and all the difficulties that will certainly come with it.

Regards to all,

John Mccann

Welcome, I think you are very brave trying to do this remotely from Dublin. I hail from South London but would not contemplate trying to research there from this distance. That's why I work on the memorials close to where I now live.

I researched just one man off the local memorial for a talk and found the following - names of parents from CWGC, photo from local paper with report of his death, father's employment and members of family from 1901 census, additional family info from a gravestone in the local churchyard, address from a plaque to his parents on a local park bench!, photo of his house that I took myself (using park bench info) and the fact that his brother had been murdered (from speaking to locals). In this case there was nothing further to be had from school or church memorials, but there could have been. Based on my little experience, I would want to spend between 1 and 3 hours researching each man to get all the info.

I notice that you intend to include a regimental badge for each individual. Have you planned what to do with those who changed Regiment? For example, MGC or RAF usually came from somewhere else first.

There are other Coatbridge memorials on the SWMP apart from the main civic memorial, cross-referencing these will give a fuller picture of the man.

Good luck.

Hello everyone,

I'd like to say a big thank you to all of you for your continued efforts in finding scottish war graves..Thanks to you, I have been able to visit the grave of Stephen Stewart who died on the 8th of december 1998 in Mrkonjic Grad,Bosnia Herzegovina. He is buried in Shanwell cemetry,Carnoustie..Stephen died as the tragic result of a runaway 432 armoured fighting vehicle crushing him against another. I was the medic on duty at the time of his death..his death affected us all greatly and the one overwhelming memory i have is of holding his hand after we had stopped the resuscitation attempt. The feeling of sending someone's son home close to christmas will continue to haunt me..but at least i got to pay my respects to him one last time

Kind regards

Glenn Brown (ex RAMC)

Hello Glenn,

Welcome to the Forum.

Thank you very much for sharing with us the tragic events that lead to Stephen Stewart's death. I have amended the post on the Shanwell Cemetery Thread to include this information.

Paul,
Ive got most of my basic info from SDGW/CWGC.I plan to go to Coatbridge to research further ie libraries etc.I dont know how thorough a background ill be able to do on each man but ill do my best.RE:the regimental badge im going to list former regiment and put that badge there also.Im trying to keep positive as the more i do the more the project seems a bit out of my depth. But if anything im a stubborn you know what and when i start i finish although God only knows when that may be.I only started this 2 weeks ago and i have most of the mens basic details and have 710 MIC`s so im optimistic. Thanks for your advice.I think you all may be hearing a bit from me in the coming months.

John
