This is fondly known in the village as "The Auld Kirkyard". It sits in "The Castle" area of the village (yes there was a castle there - from the Wars of Independence). It lies to the west of the A76 behind the Royal Bank of Scotland at map reference NS 616137. There are three burials of interest
1. Pte A Ross, Royal Scots Fusiliers
2. Pte Thomas Samuel Dick, Machine Gun Corps
3. Pte T Mathieson, Kings Own Scottish Borderers

All from the First World War

Private Mathieson is buried in a family plot. His mother died while the family were resident in New Cumnock and is buried in the Auld Kirkyard. The family subsequently moved to Kirkconnel. Private Mathieson of the KOSB (CWGC has no number) died of infectious jaundice in the Western Infirmary, Glasgow on the 19th November 1917 and is buried beside his mother.

This stone also remembers Thomas' brother, Joshua, who was killed in action in France on the 15th September 1916 aged 18yrs.
S/15661 Pte Joshua Mathieson, 11th Bn., A&SH, remembered on the Thiepval Memorial, Pier and Face 15A and 16C
Both brothers are also remembered on the Kirkconnel village war memorial
