Photographs kindly supplied by John Kennedy.

David Elliot Mackirdy of Birkwood
General in the army, Colonel of Second Battalion the Welsh (late 69th) Regiment

Also Leopold George Frederic Elliot Fawcett, Captain, Lanarkshire Yeomanry
Killed in action on 6th November 1917 near Gaza, Palestine aged 28 years.

I've been unable to find a CWGC reference to Charles David Scott Mackirdy - I imagine it's one of a dozen variants in spelling that I haven't thought of, however, the following is from SNWM:

Surname MacKIRDY
Firstname Charles David Scott
Service Number
Date Death 22/03/1918
Decoration
Place of birth
Other (in German hands). 11th (Prince Albert's Own) Hussars.
SNWM roll COMMANDS AND STAFF; CAVALRY (EXCLUDING GREYS AND SCOTTISH YEOMANRY)
Rank Lt
Theatre of death Unknown

The relationship between these 2 men is unknown.

Name: FAWCETT, LEOPOLD GEORGE FREDERIC
Initials: L G F
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Captain
Regiment/Service: Royal Scots Fusiliers
Unit Text: 12th (Ayr and Lanark Yeomanry) Bn.
Age: 28
Date of Death: 06/11/1917
Additional information: Son of Lt. Col. J. Malcolm Fawcett and the Hon. Mrs. Caroline Fawcett, of Peckleton House, Hinckley, Leicestershire. Born at Scaleby Castle, Cumberland.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: M. 84.

The above 2 men are commemorated at St. Silas Church, Woodlands, Glasgow, see: http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?p=42858&mforum=warmemscot#42858

Well sleuthed Ken!

Do we presume there is some sort of relationship between the 2 men then?

Amazing where these men 'turn-up'

My sincere thanks to Margaret Richardson for sending me the following photos of 2 Leicestershire memorials on which Leopold George Frederic Fawcett is listed.

The 1st photo shows Peckleton Church Memorial (name 2nd from top).

These next two are from Kirkby Mallory, which is about 3 miles away from Peckleton. Leopold's parents lived about half way between the 2 villages.

I think I may have solved the mystery regarding Leopold Fawcett and Charles Mackirdy. I found 2 Memorials in Lesmahagow Old Parish Church yesterday and have posted them on the appropriate site. However I will also post here.

From the inscription on the first plaque it states " cousins Eva and Elliott Mackirdy" Is this the answer to the mystery?
