David McCheyne Rait was born in Forres in 1891. He was the son of David, a farmer, and Lizzie Rait of Dyke, Forres, Elgin and enlisted in Forres.
He landed in France, as Lance Corporal 12277, on the 3 September 1915 and was Killed in Action on the 11 June 1916, whilst serving with the 1/6th (Banff and Donside) Battalion Gordon Highlanders, part of 152nd Brigade in 51st (Highland) Division.
He is buried in Maroeuil British Cemetery, about 4 miles north-west of Arras, France
