I noticed the gravestone and entry re Robert Marshall. I am a relative of Robert Marshall referred to as the son of John Aitken Marshall and Annie Marshall of 19 Freeland Place, Kirkintilloch. This is DEFINITELY NOT the person referred to in the gravestone shown in the photograph.

My relative died young, unmarried and had no known dependents. His body was found in Guedappe (so it appears he did not die at sea) and was subsequently buried in Neuville St Vaast.

He had no known connection outwith the Kirkintilloch area.

The following excerpt was obtained from the Kirkintilloch Herald:

"Mrs. Aitken Marshall residing at 19 Freeland Place, received word in the beginning of last week that her son, Private Robert Aitken Marshall, A.&.S.H., had been killed. The news came first through another soldier's letter, but on Thursday Mrs. Marshall received official confirmation, her son having been killed on 23rd April. To many people the deceased soldier was known best by the name of Aitken. He enlisted six months ago, and had been two months in France. He was nineteen years of age, and at home was employed as a van-man with the Vindanda Laundry Company, in which capacity he was well known, not only in this community, but in Bearsden and Milngavie, Stepps and Chryston, Kilsyth and other places. Of a quiet, unassuming nature, he early identified himself with religious work in the town, and was greatly liked by all who knew him."

In spite of all of the above, I would be interested to receive any further information on my relative. My research is still at an early stage.

Hello David,

Welcome to the forum and thank you for the information.

(I've deleted your duplicate post)

Now and again in cases where an individual is difficult to identify, we try our best to find them on both CWGC and SNWM and I'm the guilty party here - the details I posted were the closest I could find. You'll have noticed that all the text is in italics and that I have added a comment that the info may 'not refer to the correct man'.

I will, of course delete that wrong information and when I get a chance, see if I can find anything referring to the correct man!

I had a look to see if his name was amongst the family memorials at Auld Aisle Cemetery in Kirkintilloch but unfortunately not.

I had a look at the CWGC listings for La Targette British Cemetery and the Canadian Cemetery, Neuville-St. Vaast and the only Marshall I could find was the one I had wrongly presumed to be the one listed on the stone in Grandsable. (You'll notice that CWGC have him wrongly listed as having the middle name of Arthur.)
