PRIVATE DAVID MILLER
Mr. John Miller, plasterer, Cowane Street, has received news of the death of his brother, Private David Miller, who was also a plasterer, and a son of the late David Miler of the firm Mackie & Miller, plasterers, Stirling. David Miller left Stirling about sixteen years ago, and went out to South Africa, where he was engaged at his trade. In the spring of this year he joined the South African Infantry, and served in East Africa. He died in the Military Hospital at Durban from fever. Deceased, who was 47 years of age, leaves a widow and one son, the former being a daughter of the late Mr. McNair, nailer, St. Ninians. Mr Miller will be remembered by the older generation of football followers as a member of the Stirling Athletic, a team from the Cowane Street quarter of the town, well known in the early days of junior football in the district.

JOHN CAMPBELL BETT, U.S.I.
Died at Langres, France 12th February 1918 aged 28 years
Son of James and Christina Bett (nee McLaren)
Stirling Observer, 14th May 1918
Stirling U.S. Soldier Dies in France
PRIVATE J. C. BETT
The name of John C. Bett, a Stirling young man, who had been in the United States for some years, appears in the casualty list of American soldiers who have died in France. Deceased, who was 28 years of age, was a son of Mr James Bett, carter, 57 Wallace Street, Stirling. Before going to America he was a well-known member of the Stirling Boating Club. The Elko Independent, Nevada, states that he came to Elko five years ago, and had since been associated with his brother, James Bett on his stock ranch at Bullion. He belonged to the Presbyterian Church at Elko, and was a valued member of the Knights of Pythias Lodge, and one of the three members of that organisation with the U.S. colours, and whose names were placed recently on the honour roll displayed in their Castle Hall. He was a quiet, unassuming man, with deep Christian convictions, and was ever cheerful and happy. He is the first Elko boy serving in France to fall. The Independent states that while in Camp Mills near Washington in November, Private Bett took a severe cold from which he never fully recovered, He died of pneumonia in France on 12th February.

Archibald Cowan is my grandfather. I am a daughter of his youngest Son Thomas (Tommy). It is a shame that my father nor I or any of my siblings never knew him. Prior to his death he spent some time in a prisoner of war camp (Stalag) in Poland before being repatriated. He died shortly after returning home to Stirling. In his former life he was a coal miner and lived all of his life in the Raploch.
