Once again my friend Fraser Mitchell has come across an interesting headstone in INVERKEITHNEY churchyard to

"
John (James) MAITLAND , born at Boghead 8th November 1711 and in the year 1745 was Chaplain to LORD OGILVY'S REGIMENT , the Servant of PRINCE CHARLES STUART ... greater part of his life in France .. "

( Book " No Quarter Given ; the muster roll of Prince Charles Edward Stuart's army 1745-46 page 95 : Forfarshire (ogilvy's) under Col David Ogilvy , lord ogilvy , son of the Earl of Airlie

Chaplain :

Maitland , John ( James ) , Careston : escaped to Sweden

Stone at Inverkeithney churchyard :

Chaplain in Forfarshire (Ogilvy's) in the Muster roll of Prince Charles Edward Stuart's army 1745 -1746 :

James Maitland of Boghead of Haddo , born 1671 , son of preceding , educated at Marischal College, Aberdeen , MA (1689) , called 23rd march and ord 14 May 1701 , dep by General Assembly 9 thMay 1715 for Jacobitism and refusing to observe the Thanksgiving for the accession of George 1 on 20th Jan that year . He opended an Episcopal meeting house in the parish but retired to Boghead of Haddo , where he died 16th April 1740 . He married a lady (name unknown ) who was buried at Inverkeithny 11th April 1736 , and had issue JOHN , born 8th Nov 1711, who in 1746 was app. CHAPLAIN TO LORD OGIVIE s REGIMENT in the service of PRINCE CHARLES , and accompanied it to CULLODEN, where he is said to have administered in oatmeal and whisky (no other element being at hand) the Holy Sacrament to the dying Lord Strathallan. He was obliged to flee the country , and lived for many years in France as the Abbe Maitland. He returned to Edinburgh , died 17thDec 1800 and was buried in Greyfriars Churchyard. (Thanaye of Fermartyn , 182 ; Jervise s Epitaphs . ii , 273 (where the name of the first John in (i) should be James .)
