Hi,

firstly, apologies for the double post. (I've posted the below in the "New Members" section by mistake.)

I'm new to the site, but have been trailing the local war graves of Lanarkshire in conjunction with my father for many years now.

Which brings me to my question. Whats the site policy for photos taken by A.N.other, but posted by an existing member? Situation is: Dad spent literally years tracking down graves, sent the info on to a library curator, who seems to have given them to a member here, existing member posted the photos but no photographic credit given to the originator.

Surely a partial credit would be appropriate? I'm posting on behalf of him here (he's not too technically astute)- he's not annoyed as such, and is delighted to see the photos up here for the greater good- but credit where credit is due, surely?

We take ownership seriously here and all photographs should be attributed to the original photographer so we're very suprised about your post.

From what I can see of the Lanarkshire posts most have been done by long standing members of this forum who've gone out to these cemeteries themselves and taken photographs of these stones.

Can you give some examples of your father's photographs being used without permission so we can sort this out.

By the way I've deleted the other post to avoid confusion.

I dont think there's been anything deliberate, to be honest. Dad passed all his photos (8 or 9 folders worth) to a Kate D'Arcy at Coatbridge Library a year or so back. But then Kate left (?) due to illness. Dad's not sure what happened after that- my guess is that someone has kindly posted them here for the greater good.

As an example: 4 shots from Old Monkland in the "Lanarkshire" section- Boyce, Ferns, McLurg- all taken by him, as well as the single shot from Avondale. (He's wondering why the other 6 from Avondale weren't included btw.)
As I say, I'm sure its a genuine oversight, and perhaps the provenance of the photos wasn't passed from Kate D'Arcy. But he spent a lot of time and effort on them, it would be nice to have some small credit.

The Old Monkland Cemetery & Churchyard photographs are mine - I would be quite happy to post the original uncropped images to verify this.

The CWGC stones I'm sure could very well be mistaken for copies of someone's else's photos as there's not much 'surrounding detail', but if full photos were put side by side - I'm sure this would confirm who's photos are whose.

No offence intended, and of course its possible that more than one person is tracking these things- its a popular subject.

I really dont want to get into a war about this, just acting on my father's wishes, so I've asked Dad to absolutely make sure of what he's saying before I post anything else. As you say, someone's shot of a stone could look very like someone else's.

Most of us have too many of our own photos and not enough time to sort them out and post them.

Thanks for your last post. I think your father better have a close look at the images on the forum again and compare them to his originals. The Old Monkland ones were taken by Anne Anderson and the Avondale one by David McNay. Neither of these members would use other people's photographs without crediting them.

After looking if he still insists that they are his images please send me copies of his originals so I can compare them with the ones here.

Unfortunately David McNay can't access the internet at the moment but he has asked me to post that the photograph at Strathaven is his and he did take others that day but he hasn't had a chance to post them yet.

He also has never been to Coatbridge Library.

It looks like this is a case of TT's dad mistaking other photographs for his.

I have to say it's quite likely photos will have been taken from the same position so they will look quite similar but since they are in public cemeteries and given the ease of photographing hundreds of stones with digital cameras these days it means they could have been photographed by several people recently. In fact I wouldn't be suprised if other images of these same stones have been passed on to the former British War Memorial Project by someone else.

Hopefully we've got to the bottom of this matter now.

Actually I have been to Coatbridge Library many times, but only to borrow books, and certainly not in the last ten years!

My Strathaven picture was, I believe, taken the same day I photographed the war memorial. It was a freezing cold day with a biting wind, hence the reason the photo concerned is a little blurry - I could hardly feel my hands.

I always make sure to give full credit in the event I upload photos belonging to others, and I make sure I have prior permission to do so.
