Personally I think it is terrible to sell off parts of a cemetery......what happens to all the graves and the people buried there? Were the families consulted before they sold off where their loved ones were buried? Terrible!

I was brought up in that area and remember all of these houses being built. When Morningside Court and Balcarres Court were built at the beginning of the 1970s there was a heap of headstones left in the corner of the cemetery. I cannot say for sure that they came from the site that was built upon.

I think the houses in Morningside Drive were built in the late 1970s and early 1980s. It was said at the time that they were built on plots where no burials had taken place, although their boundary fences go right up to the graves. That is how the few headstones that are close behind some of these houses are along a corridor between garden fences.

The flats that were built at the beginning of the 1980s in the original cemetery gateway off Belhaven Terrace were built on ground mostly occupied by the cemetery lodge house, a circular summer house and (I think) gardeners' sheds. It may well be that there were no graves in that section.

At the time these areas were sold off, the cemetery was privately owned. After years of neglect, and I think financial instability of the owners, the Council bought (compulsorily purchased?) the cemetery (1980s?).
