Hi Dr Jon,
Thank You For these wonderful photos of all the young mens Headstones and Graves. My Wifes Father Is Flgt/Sgt S.R.Greer,So yesterday was the 67 Anniversary of his Death. I came home from Church yesterday morning and got onto the site and it was quite a time for reflection. My wife was thirteen when her died and she and her sister were brought up by their Dad's, Mum and Dad. Gran and Granfather Greer. As you will see he was by far the oldest I'm pretty sure at 33. Les Buttimore who was killed in the same crash always called him Dad.As did all the others in their contingent from the day they left New Zealand till they started to separate to different squadrons. His younger brother joined the RNZAF as a pilot not long after Dad had finished his training in Canada. Ashley James Greer was his name.,Dad was staying in Peacehaven just out of Brighton and was transfered up to Turnberry.Just a couple of days before Ashley arrived at Peacehaven to see him. They never got to meet each other again. Ashley Flew Spitfires till the end of the war. Was demobbed in NZ and after 18 months applied for his commission in the RAF and got it.So he and his New wife departed NZ for the UK. He was based at Salisbury Fleet Air Arm Station. His wife stayed with the people who had Boarded his brother for a few weeks. Unfortunately he was killed in an Air Collision. His Commander at Salisbury was Court Martialled for instructing him to fly a De Haviland Rapide with two trainee pilots.Ashley had never flown a twin engine aircraft. My wife was only a few years younger than Ashley and she has told me when the Telegram arrived and Gran and Gramdfather read of
the collision the whole of Palmerston could hear Grandfather Crying in the Garden as they had lost both boys then. Ashleys Wife was Pregnat with their first babe but she had a Miscarriage almost within a day or two.It took 3 months before she could get a berth on a ship.My wife asked me just to drop you an email to Thank You for the wonderful site.We have visited the Boys graves twice 1974 and 1992.So as I mentioned it was quite a loving time of reflection for us yesterday. I never met her Dad as I am from Liverpool but spent 2 1/2 years at Babcock and Wilcox completing my Studies and training 1951 - 1953.I actually met her as a Passenger on the RMS Rangitane as she had done a trip to visit her Dad's and Ashley's graves.Thank You for bearing with me as I have rambled on a bit. Our Youngest daughter and husband are visiting Dunure and Old Sarum with my youngest sister and husband in late August early Sept. Thank You and Your Team.Best Regards Ken and Rita Berry
