And finally one from the 2nd Boer War. George Middleton fell at Doornkop during the Battle of Johannesburg which took place from May 27 to 29, 1900. during the Second Boer War. The ridge (Doornkop = thorn hill) was taken by seven infantry battalions, including the City Imperial Volunteers and Gordon Highlanders of Lt Gen Ian Hamilton. Winston Churchill, a young journalist at the time, is reported to have seen the 1st Battalion in action and wrote, 'There is no doubt that they are the finest Regiment in the world.' The Gordon Highlanders Museum hosts an annual Doornkop Dinner in honour of the engagement.
