I came across this one in the research records of the parish churchyard and was wondering whether or not it would count as a war grave. The headstone was erected by Jane Stewart and the relevant bit states: Also her brother John Stewart who died in Malta on his way back from the Crimea 4th Febry 1856 aged 60 years.
Although the death occurred at the end of the Crimean War 60 seems a little old for a serviceman. What do others think?

That's an interesting one. I'd say the only reason he was in the Crimea at that time was because of the military expedition. Whatever his role, soldier, sailor or civilian I think he should be included because we record Scottish civilians who have been involved in war work here.
Kind regards
