Lieut William Stroyan.

One of the great explorers of the Victorian era was Richard Burton, famous for his search for the source of the Nile. In 1854/55 his now famous association with John Hanning Speke began but at the same time he renewed his acquaintance with Lt William Stroyan of the Indian Navy with whom he had worked in Sind. In April 1855 Burton, Speke and Stroyan embarked on the ambitious project to trek to the Nile from the Somali coast. On 18 April 1855 their camp was attacked by Somali tribesmen and Stroyan was killed by a spear through the heart. The proposed expedition was abandoned and the survivors, carrying Stroyan's body arrived at Berbera and embarked on ship for Aden. Stroyan's body was decomposing too rapidly for removal to Aden so he was buried at sea. His death was reported, briefly, in the Wigtownshire Free Press (7 June 1855): At Berbera, North Eastern Africa, in April last, Lieutenant William Stroyan, HEICS [Honourable East India Company Service], aged 30 years, third son of John Stroyan Esq, Barr, Wigtownshire.

In memory of John Stroyan who died at Barr Parish of Pennighame 9th Decr 1863 aged 77 years and his wife Janet McCornick who fied at Barr 15th Feby 1862 aged 66 years And their children Jane who died Balgown, Parish of Kirkmaiden 19th Novr 1851 (?) aged 32 years William Lieutenant in the Hon East India Company's service who was killed by the natives at Bernerah, North Eastern Africa while in joint command with Captains Burton and Speke of a surveying expedition into the Somali Country (?) 19th April 1855 aged 30 years Samuel who died at Barr aged 14th April 1860 aged 33 years Henry who died at Barr 25th Feby 1861 aged 28 years. This monumnet is erected in 1869 by the survivors of the family to keep in affectionate remembrance those who are not lost but gone before.

Lieutenant John Underwood

Wigtownshire Free Press (28 July 1859): We this week have to record the demise of Lieutenant Underwood of the Galloway rifles, a gentleman who had endeared himself to all ranks and classes of the Regiment of which he was an armament [?] as well as of the inhabitants of the town in which he was cast for the last six years. Formerly of the 5th Fusiliers, he came as sergeant-major to the GR Militia, and the whole of the preliminary drill of the regiment was conducted by him in that capacity for some months. His gentlemanly manner, and general intelligence on all matters connected with the drill and discipline of the regiment brought him in contact with the other officers, who felt that he was eminently qualified for a higher sphere of usefulness to themselves and the regiment generally entitled him to promotion, and during the summer of 1854 his appointment to the rank of Lieutenant took place. For the last twelve months his health gave symptoms of breaking up, and when the regiment was recently embodied he was unable to take any part of duty. His remains were followed by his Colonel, Sir William Maxwell, and the staff officers in uniform, and a large number of sorrowing friends and acquaintances.

1859 In memory of Lieutenant John Underwood of the Galloway Rifles "A noble soldier wise counsellor and upright man." Erected by his brother officers.

I was unable to locate the stone for Lieut James McMillan which was in a particularly overgrown part of the cemetery. Apparently the inscription reads: In memory of Lieut James McMillan 75th Stirlingshire Regt who died at Pietermaritzburg Natal - where he lies buried - on the 11th January 1872, aged 28 years.
