Slightly out of the remit of this project perhaps but this is a munitions worker who was killed in the factory where he worked.
Reginald Peter Purcell who was accidentally killed in HM Factory Dornock
15th March 1925 aged 26 years

Alexander Tait Armstrong – age 29 – Lance Corporal (3571) 1/9th (The Dunbartonshire) Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
Alexander was a policeman at Lenzie, Dunbartonshire when he enlisted in May 1915. He joined his battalion in France in January 1916 but was admitted to hospital with rheumatic fever. After a relapse he was evacuated to the UK and was discharged from the army as no longer fit for active service and was awarded a Silver War Badge (96000) in July 1916. He was living at The Rand in Eastriggs and working as an housing inspector when he died.
Born 1890 in Gretna, Dumfriesshire. Son of the late John and Helen Armstrong of Dornock. Husband of Margaret (Trodden) Armstrong of 19 The Rand and of Falklands Road, Eastriggs who he married in Annan in 1913.
Died on 14 January 1920 and buried in a Commonwealth War Grave in Dornock Cemetery. |

Ralph Peter Galloway – age 29 – Sergeant (L8503) Queen's Own (Royal West Kent Regiment)
Ralph enlisted in December 1906 and joined the 2nd Battalion of the West Kents in India in February 1907. He was promoted to Sergeant in March 1914 and landed with his battalion in Mesopotamia in February 1915. Due to illness he was admitted to hospital in Basra before being evacuated back to India. He was discharged from the army in in August 1916 as no longer fit for active service and was awarded a Silver War Badge (10123) By October 1916 he was living at 25 Lady Street, Annan and when he died he was a wages clerk, living with his wife and child at 30 Dunedin Street, Eastriggs.
Born 1888 in Lambeth, London. Son of William and Elizabeth of 129 Princes Road, Lambeth, London. Husband of Annie Mary (Shannon) Galloway who he married in 1917 in Whitehaven, Cumberland.
(Annie died in Gretna in 1920 and is buried with Ralph. Their child, Ralph Alexander, was cared for by Annie's mother Elizabeth Shannon in Gretna Township)

James Leitch Kirk – age 27 – Private (1875) Royal Army Medical Corps.
James enlisted as Private (5113) in the RAMC in September 1910. He left the army in November 1913 but re-enlisted in September 1914. However he was discharged from the army in July 1915 when he was found to have Bright's disease and was no longer fit for active service. He was awarded a Silver War Badge (33784). James was working as a Surgery Orderly and was living at 17 Police Quarters in Eastriggs when he died.
Born 1890 in Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire. Son of John and Grace Kirk of Lily Bank, Lesmahagow.
Husband of Isabel Gertrude Beattie of 89 Charles Street, Carlisle who he married in 1913 in Glasgow.
Died on 11 April 1918 and buried in a Commonwealth War Grave in Dornock Cemetery. |

Samuel Kirk Little – age 22 – Aircraftman 2nd Class (947680) Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Samuel had been educated at Kirkpatrick Fleming and at Gretna schools. He was a lorry driver with Waughs of Annan when he enlisted and was serving with the transport section at RAF Leuchers in Fife when he was accidentally killed near Perth.
Born 1917 in Kirkpatrick Fleming.
Son of Thomas and Josephina (Kirk) Little of Stapleton, Dornock and of Moss Cottage, Lochmaben, Dumfriesshire.
Died on Active Service on 18 April 1940 and buried in a Commonwealth War Grave in Dornock Cemetery.

CWGC are amending their Debt of Honour Register to show the date of death as 16 September. This was due to a scanning error.
David Armstrong – age 24 – Private (229384) 44th Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
David was a labourer and was serving with the 90th Regiment of Militia when he enlisted in Winnipeg, Manitoba in June 1915. He sailed from Halifax, Nova Scotia to England in April 1916 and landed in France in August. He was wounded in the head and leg at Vimy Ridge in April 1917 and was treated at the 14th General Hospital before being evacuated to the St. Luke's Bradford War Hospital, Yorkshire where he died from a cerebellar abscess and meningitis in September 1917.
Born 1891 at Moorhouse, Dornock as David Davidson Armstrong. Son of the late Walter Armstrong and of Margaret (Davidson) Armstrong of 3 East Road, Eastriggs, Dornock.
Died of Wounds on 16 September 1917 and buried in a Commonwealth War Grave in Dornock Cemetery. |

Born 1889 in Lowthertown, Dornock. Son of the late John and Jane (Reay) Muirhead. Nephew of William Stewart of Lowthertown, Dornock.
In 1891 and 1901 Jane and her sons lived with her uncle William Stewart. Jane died in 1903.
Died on Service on 7 November 1918 and buried in Dornock Cemetery.
William Stewart Muirhead, Military Medal – age 31 – Private (75744) 29th Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
William was working as a grocer when he enlisted in Vancouver, British Columbia in November 1914. He named his uncle William Stewart of Lowthertown as his next of kin. He was awarded the Military Medal.
Born 1887 in Lowthertown, Dornock. Son of John and Jane (Reay) Muirhead. In 1891 and 1901 Jane and her sons lived with her uncle William Stewart. Jane died in 1903.
Died on Service on 18 November 1918 and buried in Dornock Cemetery.
James and William both died of influenza at the home of Thomas Reay (their uncle) at 56 Station Road, St.Luke's, Wallsend, Northumberland. |
