I am new to the forum, so please excuse any mistakes, I am a native of Kirkie, and moved to Ypres in Belgium last year. So far I have photgraphed the graves of all men on the Kirkie War Memorial who are buried in the salient if anyone is interested. My great uncle 325794 Pte John McIntosh 11th A&SH is on the Menin Gate, and his brothr in law 12942 L/Cpl William Lang, 9th Royal Dublin Fusiliers is buried in the Ypres Town Cemetery. I also have another great uncle, John's brother, 201640 Pte James McIntosh buried in Raperie British Cemetery, Villemontoire. I also have the photographs of the graves of all with the name Sutherland (my family name)in the salient.

Hello John,

Welcome to SWGP.

It would be a fantastic addition to the Project if you were to add these men to our 'Overseas' thread - we already have bits and pieces from here, there and everywhere.

We try where possible to link back and forward between the Memorials Project and Graves Project. You could add further posts to the Kirkie Memorial thread and link these to your own photos the the 'Overseas Burials' thread. Alternatively, if it's something you would consider, any one of the moderators could edit existing posts (if we have found a family grave in Scotland) and add your photos of their CWGC grave alongside.

That applies to any other Scotsmen/women you may have photos/information on.

Photos have to be uploaded to a hosting site, e.g. Photobucket before adding to either forum, but if you have any problems/questions/queries - just ask.

There is a thread which explains 'how-to'.

Have a wee look here: http://scottishwargraves.phpbbweb.com/viewtopic.php?t=6

If you're still not sure, and you'd still like to have your photos added, contact any of the mods via P.M., then, once personal e-mail details have been 'swapped', you could forward any photos you'd like added.

It would be a great help if you could supply some sort of index. By that I mean something as simple as a list of names, regiments, dates of death etc., so we don't have to try and figure out 'who's who'.

Anne

John,
A belated welcome to this forum.
I believe that our paths crossed at the unveiling of the Scottish Memorial in August 2007.

As I was the UK co-ordinator of the project, it is most probable that we did meet then, unfortunately I cannot remember anyone from Hawick called Derek, the only one I know from that area being Alan Brydon. If you know Alan give him my regards and tell him I'll see him next October.

I was Messers Brydon and Stoddarts taxi driver around the salient.
If it wasn't for me they'd still be wandering around trying to find the Scottish Memorial. Wink

In that case, my thanks for finding the memorial, and my apologies for not remembering you. I myself initially thought that the memorial would be sited on the Ieper side of the motorway to where it is. Next time you are in the salient please let me know.

John

very many thanks for posting the image of my great uncle's headstone at Steenkerke (L/Cpl H S Watson Special N Coy, Royal Engineers, kia 14 Nov 1917).

I have yet to make the pilgrimage in person and to date had only a sepia postcard showing the original painted wooden cross that was originally set to mark his final resting place so many miles from his native Kirkie.

many thanks

Cowgate

Cowgate

If you can get the original photograph scanned we can edit the post in the Steenkirke thread to show the original cross and current CWGC headstone together.

Regards

Adam

Hi Cowgate,
Glad I could be of assistance. I'm from Hillhead myself.
