Major
William McCall MC
Royal Artillery
21st November 1941
Major McCall is somewhat of a mystery. His death notice in the Cumnock Chronicle of the 28th November 1941 states that he died suddenly on active service in Lincolnshire and his decorations were DSO and MC.
However his obituary in the same newspaper credits him with the DSO and bar, MC and Croix de Guerre. The CWGC credits him only with the MC.
According to his obituary he had a rapid rise through the ranks during the First World War culminating as Lieutenant Colonel of the Gordon Highlanders in the Army of Occupation in Colgne. After debolisation he trained as a gym teacher and in 1941 he offered his services and was appointed lieutenant in the RA once again rising to the eventual rank of major.
The mystery surrounds his Great War service. The London Gazette of the 28/8/1915 cites his promotion to 2nd Lt from 17/10/1914 and that of 18/6/1917 gives Lieut. (acting Captain) William McCall's MC citation. There is ,however, no mention of DSO and bar or Croix de Guerre. Could there have been two William McCalls and during his research, the Chronicle reporter got them mixed up?
Major McCall is not mentioned on any of the village war memorials or plaques
Any offers of help gratefully received.

John Murray was a private in the 5th Ayrshire Bn. of the Home Guard. He drowned tragically while swimming locally and is buried in a family plot.
