Don't know enough about Sudan to decide whether this lad on a family stone in Lintrathen churchyard is war dead or not. Date fits with the period immediately preceding Kitchener's final advance on Omdurman and I can't think of any other reason for young Abram to have been out there at that time.

Your thoughts would be welcome...

Abram Milne Lowson died at Darmali Soudan (sic) 26th July 1898 aged 22 years

See http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/warmemscot-ftopic1644.html

The death of Private A Lowson of the Seaforth Highlanders is mentioned in WO28/366 of The National Archives (15-31 July 1898).
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/displaycataloguedetails.asp?CATID=5728722&CATLN=6&accessmethod=5

The following webpage includes Lance-Corporal Lowson: http://www.angelfire.com/mp/memorials/nile98.htm

And http://www.archive.org/stream/egyptiansoudani01sworgoog#page/n415/mode/1up (source of above webpage)

Soudan was (is?) the French spelling of Sudan.

Some Seaforths who died in the Sudan in 1898 were also commemorated here:

Pte. Lowson isn't one of them but it's probably worth pointing out in this thread anyway.

Regards

Adam
