Margaret Durno is not commemorated by the CWGC but is commemorated on two Aberdeenshire Civic War Memorials - Moneymusk Square and Gordon District, Kemnay.

Some 18 months ago I posted details of Margaret's location and cause of death on the Moneymusk W.M. thread with a request asking if the location of her grave was known assuming that she was buried in Scotland. Unfortunately Margaret's details disapeared into my pending file waiting a response to my request.

However I have now rescued her details and wonder, with the addition of new members since my first request, If anybody can advise if and where she is buried in Scotland.

This is a sad case as at the start of the war there were five members of the family - Father, Mother, two sons and one daughter, by the end of the war the two sons had died in France, the daughter had died in Woolwich, London and the father had died sometime after 1916 possibly from natural causes whether mother was still alive I have been unable to ascertain.

I can only suggest that the Burials Office at the Aberdeenshire local authority would know.

£10 according to their website.

Which, if the records are still on paper, isn't too bad when you think how many volumes may have to be consulted.

Certainly better than the £45 that Greenwich City Council charge where I will have to go to if I cannot find her in Scotland.

From scotlandspeople - the General Records of Scotland site.

Alexander Durno age 55 death registered 1913 in Kemway, Aberdeenshire.

One of the WM listings has "son of Barbara J. and the late Alexander....."
Barbara Jane Durno (Mortimer) age 84 Death registered 1947 in Arbroath and St. Vigeans, Angus.

Either gravestone might have details of the children.

That's interesting because in my original post I quote Alexander Durno as having died sometime berween 1916 & 1918 as the first sons CWGC Cert. Who died 1916 - James Durno. G.H. quotes "Son of Alexander and Barbara...." so my assumption, obviously was that Alexander was still alive.

However, the next sons CWGC Cert. who died 1918 - Leslie Durno, S.H. quotes " Son of Barbara ... and the late Alexander...". So a correction to my original statement, their were only four Durnos alive at the start of the war.

So having ascertained that there is a cemetery in Kemnay I have to assume that he is buried there also as Angus, I note, is next door to Aberdeenshire there is the possibility that Barbara Durno is also buried there and the remote possibility that Margaret may be buried with her parents.

Will attempt to contact Kemnay Cemetery and ask some questions.

I have actually located a web page for the Parish Church of Kemnay and sent an enquiry asking if they can identify a grave for Margaret Duno's father and possibly Margaret herself.

Will advise the outcome and a request if necessary

I think it safe to call of my search for Margaret's grave in Scotland as I have now received confirmation that she is not buried in the family Lair in Kemnay where I feel sure she would have been if her body had been transported to Scotland.

Now concentrating on the area in London where she died.

Margaret's grave has been located.

I have just been informed by Greenwich Council, London that she is buried in Greenwich Cemetery. Unfortunately the poor lass is buried in an unmarked public grave, not an auspicious way to end your days.

However I do have the reference to the area and my daughter, sometime in the near future, is going to investigate and photograph the area and, with luck, may be able to pinpoint the specific grave location.

One does ones best. When, and if, we locate the actual spot I shall ascertain what the possibility is of having, at least, a small tablet or whatever, placed on it.
