The inscription on the stone would indicate that Pte. James Sinclair was the step-son of Crawford Russell who presumably re-married after his wife Margaret Bradford’s death in 1904, making James the step-brother of L/Cpl. William Russell. But from Pte. James Sinclair’s CWGC entry, his mother is listed as Ann Russell Sinclair which usually indicates that her maiden name would have been Russell, married name Sinclair.

Crawford Russell died on 11th February 1951 aged 80 years so it’s not a case that his 2nd wife re-married after his death to become Sinclair, unless they divorced and she then re-married Mr. Sinclair or she was previously married to a Mr. Sinclair and she is still listed under her previous married name?

What ever the circumstances were, the name of Pte. James Sinclair’s father and his mother’s maiden name will remain a mystery!

(Phew!)

Stone also posted under Sinclair.
