I could never verify Walter Neill of the Royal Scots listed on a family gravestone in Carriden Cemetery, West Lothian until now.
See: http://scottishwargraves.phpbbweb.com/viewtopic.php?p=14997#14997
On the Family stone he is listed as Walter Neill, husband of Julia Robertson, missing in active service 1918 and he is also listed on Bo'ness Civic Memorial as Neill ...... so after a bit of digging through Service Records, I found the following letter:
His name varies from Neill to McNeill throughout all 20 odd pages of his Service Record and his Regimental Number also varies from 2467 to 43435. The second number being the one listed on both CWGC and SNWM.
We are still left with a slight mystery though - he declares his 'true name' to be McNeill on the above letter, yet the gravestone lists him as Neill, Bo'ness Civic Memorial lists him as Neill and all the other members of his family are listed as Neill.
I don't think there's any doubt that this is the same man as both are listed as married to Julia (Neill, nee Robertson), living in Grangepans, Bo'ness, just along the road from Carriden.
