The CWGC has, today 1 Feb 08, launched the War Graves Photographic Project.

They have, obviously, seen the great wrok done here and decided that imitation is the greatest form of flattery!

I guess Steve Rodgers 'won the day'.

All you people who plodded through muddy graveyards, jaggy nettles and scratchy brambles to get photos for the old BWMP can see them in all their glory here . . . . . . or maybe not???

I've just looked for a wee selection of 'mine' (CWGC burials only) and so far, none of them appear to be there - it's maybe a work in progress.

Anne,

I was intending to do just that - see if anything that I supplied had found its way to the new site. The link does indicate that it will take a wee while to transfer all photographs. There was also a page for volunteers to be posted.

I think in time it will become the one stop shop for people looking for family members war graves, but until they're got 'em all.....

If you're only after one or two images then the prices seem reasonable, but £3 for an email? I suppose costs need to be met.

There's a big debate going on just now on the Great war Forum about this.

A few people have expressed concerns about the cost of the photo. I have to admit to being one of them. I don't understand the argument that it is to cover costs of the website, etc. If we can do it for free on THIS site, why can't others?

As I said on the GWF, I'm proud of the fact that do date we have not asked for one single penny from the people who either submit photos or come looking for information.

Creating and hosting a website doesn't cost the earth any more, I don't see why anyone should have to fork £3 for an image that you can easily request from various other sources.

And that, in my opinion, will prevent this from becoming the "one stop shop" for war grave images.

Having just read some of the comments on the GWF I think several volunteers will no longer be giving up their time and photographs for the WGPP so it may take them some time to complete their task.

At £3 an image I think Iwould start looking around at other sites offering a similar service if I wanted one.

Personally I hope the photographs I submit will be be freely available to all.
I don't want to sound preachy (or preach to the converted!) but for me the whole point of this project is to honour the men and women named on these graves and memorials, its what its all about.
I also like to think that making the site and photographs open and free to all is the way a Scottish site should operate, if at all possible.
That's my tuppenceworth anyway Rolling Eyes

Adam and I were discussing this today.

As long as we're involved in this project, it will remain entirely free. We've never asked for a penny from anyone volunteering or requesting a photo, and we won't start now or in the future.

If anyone requests a photo, it's theirs, no questions asked.

I never thought for a second that any pictures from this site would be subject to a charge. But thanks for the confirmation Wink .

Furthermore, if anyone wants any hi-resolution copies of any of my photos; they only have to ask.

David I should add that I was speaking for myself regarding the photographs I supply. As far as running and administrating the site is concerned I appreciate that this must take up a fare bit of time and involve some costs. Assuming the site becomes a success it could make demands on the administrators that go above and beyond the call! and also result in steadily increasing costs for the website. This is why I said that I hoped the site would remain free "if at all possible".
If the financial situation does have to be reviewed in the future I for one fully trust the administrators to let us know what's happening and discuss the situation.
