Also Canadian, but historic routes in the Orkney Islands.
I was directed here from the "Canadian Expeditionary Force Study Group" where I run the Matrix Project. I was doing a photo shoot of war graves sites for my home town (Milton, Ontario) but one of the lads was buried in the neighbouring community (Guelph, Ontario). I was taking photos of Canadian graves for the Maple Leaf Legacy Project.
It turns out, one of the graves in the Guelph Woodlawn cemetery was a Scottish lad. The graves site photo and the discussion can be found here at the CEFSG Forum, as I have read I can not post the photo here as a "newbie".
CEFSG Posting re Thomas Quin from St Georges, Edinburgh
I am a semi-retired and so as a result of my hunt for information on my two grandfathers (now more or less complete) I have become a WWI / Great War research addict. I am thinking of taking therapy for this addiction, but I don't seem to have time and they don't have any war research facilities at the clinic! I may just have to learn to live with my addition.
Both my grandfathers had emigrated to Canada, both enlisted in the CEF, then both took officers positions with Irish units. Somehow the Scottish connections in both families got lost over time. My paternal connections are Scottish from the Orkney Islands (our family tree) and my maternal connections appear also to have started in Scotland but at some time went Irish (the Kennedy Clan). That is I guess what makes up a Canadian.
Just dropped in to pass on this information and as time goes by there may be the need to exchange information and to help one another, as we do with many other researchers around the world. For those of you that are tracing Scottish ancestors that moved to Canada and joined the CEF you might want to check in with the CEFSG and/or my initiative at the Matrix Project (http://www.cefresearch.com/matrix).
