Is this a Military thingy? (as you may already have noticed I know nothing) I have googled it but not sure. Should a person be listed here that was awarded one? |

Looking up wikipedia it says it can be awarded for military merit.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Order_of_the_White_Rose
There are several classes and it can be awarded to civilians so without more information we can't be sure.
Why not post the gravestone anyway and we'll see what we can find. If it turns out not to be for a military service we can always delete it. It's so unusual on a Scottish headstone I'd be tempted to leave it in anyway!

Hi Ghostwhisperer,
I've never of that award either but it's very interesting.
I found a stone a few years back in Glasgow's Western Necropolis and the MI reads as follows:
Sir JOHN SMITH SAMUEL, K.B.E., CR 1917, D.L., J.P., F.R.S.E., F.S.A. (Scot)
Kt. Of Swedish Royal Order of Vasa (First Class)
Commander of the Order of the Crown of Belgium, Chevalier Legion of Honour
Cavalier Order of the Crown of Italy, Officer de L’Academie of France
Imperial Order of Russian Red Cross, Order of St. Sava of Serbia
Order of Prince Danilo of Montenegro, Order of Merit, Chile
Officer of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem
Lord Provost’s Secretary 1896 – 1934
Died 10th November 1934 aged 64 years
Googled some of them but couldn't find a direct miltary connection but my thoughts were the same as Adam's - post it anyway!!
Photo of the stone here: (Page 52)
