Barra is located in the south of the Outer Hebrides, and is the penultimate inhabited island in the chain of islands. Only Vatersay lies further south, but is linked to Barra by causeway. The islands south of Vatersay are uninhabited.

Barra is linked by ferry to Oban on the Scottish mainland (5 hours) and Lochboisdale in South Uist (1½ hours) from Castlebay. Another ferry leaves from Ardmhor in the north of the island for Eriskay, which links to the Uists via a causeway.

The graveyard at Borve is located on the western shore of the island, about 3 miles northwest of the main town of Castlebay. It can be approached on foot from the village of Borve.
