PHILIP McCLELLAN SMITH Born 1926 Kirkgunzeon. KIA 14/9/1965 Kenya. Family Grave in Kirkgunzeon Churchyard. Not sure if there is any military connection. Not listed on Armed Forces Memorial nor by SNWM. I assume he was killed during the "Mau Mau Emergency" so could have been police, police reserve, paramilitary, etc. I'll check local paper but any other ideas? I've just found this on Wikipedia: The Shifta War (1963–1967) was a secessionist conflict in which ethnic Somalis in the Northern Frontier District (NFD) of Kenya (a region that is and has historically been almost exclusively inhabited by ethnic Somalis[1][2][3]) attempted to join with their fellow Somalis in a Greater Somalia. I'm now wondering if this man was a member of the Kenyan military. I've seen photographs of white officers in the Zambian army after independence so there's no reason to suppose Kenya was any different in the years after 1963 and I've found a reference that the Kenyan Army commander in 1966 was British.
